What is Reiki?
“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system and benefits may include deep relaxation and the promotion of a calm peaceful sense of wellbeing.
The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple. The recipient remains clothed and comfortably lies on a couch or sits on a chair. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the body using their intuition and training as a guide. There is no massage or manipulation. Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts of the body. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance.
Reiki is taught by Reiki Master/Teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on, in person,
from Master to student. Students go through a process of initiation/attunement to the Reiki
energy. They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a personal and
emotional perspective, but also as an aid to individual development and spiritual growth.
Backed by research:
While Reiki is often considered a complementary or holistic therapy, a growing body of research supports its benefits. Studies have shown that Reiki may help reduce stress and anxiety, alleviate pain, and improve quality of life:
-
A 2017 systematic review published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine found that Reiki is more effective than placebo in reducing pain, depression, and anxiety in chronically ill patients, and in activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and healing.
-
A 2025 meta-analysis in Systematic Reviews concluded that Reiki therapy effectively reduces pain intensity, anxiety levels, and analgesic demands in various patient populations, including those undergoing cesarean sections.
-
A 2024 randomised controlled trial published in the International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine demonstrated that Reiki interventions improved sleep quality in patients with advanced cancer, indicating its potential as a supportive therapy in palliative care.

A Holistic Experience
Reiki is suitable for all ages and can be used safely alongside conventional medical treatments or other therapies. Whether you’re looking for relief from physical discomfort, emotional overwhelm, or simply wish to reconnect with a sense of inner calm, Reiki offers a nurturing and restorative space for healing and self-care.
Why not try adding Reiki to your next reflexology or facial acupressure treatment . This combination creates a beautiful synergy - reflexology works on the physical body through the feet, while Reiki works on the energetic level throughout the whole system. Together, they offer a holistic approach to wellbeing, helping you feel more aligned, balanced, and at peace.
